Introduction

Step beyond the ordinary and journey into Iceland’s untamed interior on this private 4×4 adventure to Landmannalaugar — one of the most spectacular and remote regions in the country. Famous for its vibrant rhyolite mountains, vast lava fields, and natural geothermal hot springs, this highland oasis showcases Iceland at its most dramatic and untouched.

Departing Reykjavík, you travel toward the Highlands, passing through the steaming landscapes of the Hellisheiði Geothermal Area before leaving the paved roads behind. As the scenery becomes wilder, you’ll stop at beautiful natural highlights including Hjálparfoss, the striking crater lake Ljótipollur, and the serene waters of Frostastaðavatn, each offering a unique glimpse into Iceland’s volcanic power.

Upon arrival in Landmannalaugar, the landscape opens into a surreal mix of color and texture. You may join your guide for an optional two-hour hike through the Laugahraun lava field and into geothermal valleys filled with steam vents and bubbling hot springs. The trails are scenic and rewarding, with panoramic views over multicolored mountains and black lava stretching into the distance.

For those who prefer a slower pace, the natural geothermal pool offers the perfect place to unwind, surrounded by highland silence and fresh mountain air. With your own professional local guide and private 4×4 vehicle, the day unfolds at your rhythm — combining adventure, comfort, and an authentic connection to Iceland’s wild Highlands.

Tour Itinerary

Landmannalaugar Adventure Private Day Tour

Iceland’s Most Colorful Highland Escape

We begin the day with pickup in Reykjavík at 08:00, heading east toward Iceland’s remote interior. Driving through the dramatic landscapes of the Hellisheiði Geothermal Area, we pass steaming vents and lava fields before continuing toward Selfoss and leaving the paved roads behind. As we venture into the Highlands, river crossings and rugged tracks signal the start of a true 4×4 adventure.

Scenic Stops Along the Way

Hjálparfoss – A picturesque twin waterfall framed by basalt formations, offering a beautiful contrast of dark lava rock and flowing water.

Ljótipollur – A striking red volcanic crater filled with deep blue water, creating one of the Highlands’ most dramatic color contrasts.

Frostastaðavatn – A serene highland lake surrounded by lava fields and vibrant rhyolite mountains, showcasing the vast openness of Iceland’s interior.

Exploring Landmannalaugar

Upon arrival, the landscape unfolds in a breathtaking display of color and texture. Landmannalaugar is famous for its multicolored rhyolite mountains, formed by volcanic minerals that paint the hills in shades of red, orange, green, and gold.

You may join your guide for an optional two-hour hike through the Laugahraun lava field and into geothermal valleys near Grænihryggur (Green Canyon), where steaming vents and bubbling hot springs highlight the region’s powerful volcanic activity. The trails offer panoramic views over dramatic highland scenery and are suitable for active travelers seeking an authentic experience.

For those who prefer relaxation, the natural geothermal hot spring provides the perfect opportunity to soak in warm mineral-rich waters while surrounded by untouched mountain wilderness.

After a full day immersed in Iceland’s raw beauty, we begin our journey back to Reykjavík, arriving in the evening with lasting memories of colorful mountains, volcanic craters, waterfalls, and the extraordinary landscapes of the Highlands.
