Introduction

Five-day trekking adventure with four to five active hiking days, depending on the chosen route on the final day in Thorsmork. The journey begins in Reykjavík, with a scenic drive to Landmannalaugar, where the trek starts.

This is a hut-to-hut trekking tour. The first night will be in the hut at Landmannalaugar. The second night will be in the hut at Lake Álftavatn and the third one at Emstrur hut. The last night in Thorsmork will be at Basar hut. On the last day, there are several great hiking options in Thorsmork before returning to Reykjavík.

The trek is fully supported, with luggage transported between huts and an experienced English-speaking guide leading the group.

Our group size typically ranges from 10 to 16 people, ensuring an intimate and personalized experience. We use our own vehicles for transportation, making the journey to and from the hike an integral part of the adventure. Along the way, we make scenic stops, turning the journey itself into a memorable experience.

After signing up on the tour the guide will contact group members to give advice and support the preparation. There will be an online meeting with group and the guide at some time point.

Tour Itinerary

Reykjavík City to Landmannalaugar

The tour begins in Reykjavík, with pickup from your hotel or designated bus stop starting at 8:30 AM. Ahead lies a scenic road trip as we travel from the South Coast into the Icelandic Highlands toward Landmannalaugar.

Along the way, we make several beautiful stops — including the Hjálparfoss waterfall, Sigöldugljúfur canyon, and the volcanic crater lakes Hnausapollur and Frostastaðaháls, surrounded by striking lava fields and colorful landscapes.

We expect to arrive in Landmannalaugar around 1:00 PM. We will have lunch and then we’ll head out for a warm-up hike through the Laugahraun lava field, continuing to the summit of Bláfell (about 10 km round trip). The views from the top are spectacular and offer a perfect introduction to the Icelandic Highlands.

Good to know

Supported trek / Luggage transfer

Luggage transfers are provided, ensuring a more comfortable hiking experience so you only must carry what you need for the day. Participants are required to carry only a compact day backpack containing essentials such as lunch, a water bottle, medication, sunglasses, river crossing shoes, rain gear, and any additional clothing or items needed for the day.

Difficulty Level

The Laugavegur Trek is graded moderate to challenging, suitable for trekkers with good general fitness and previous hiking experience. Daily elevation gains range from 300–600 meters, and most hiking days cover 12–15 km, with one long and demanding day of approximately 25 km from Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn.

The itinerary includes five active trekking days, often across uneven trails, geothermal areas, river crossings, and exposed highland terrain. Trekkers must be capable of hiking a full day with a light daypack, while their main luggage is transported between huts.

Proper highland equipment is essential. Participants must wear sturdy hiking boots and carry weather-protective clothing suitable for Iceland’s rapidly changing conditions, including wind, rain, and cold temperatures.

This is a supported trek, meaning your baggage is transferred between huts, leaving you free to enjoy the trail with only what you need for the day.

Accommodation is in mountain huts, shared dormitory-style. Huts are simple but comfortable, offering shelter, mattresses, and basic facilities.
Breakfast and dinner are typically included, along with packed lunches for trekking days. Dietary requirements should be communicated in advance.
You hike with a daypack only. Main luggage is transported from hut to hut, allowing you to carry just daily essentials such as water, snacks, extra layers, and rain gear.
The trekking season runs from late June to early September, when the trail is accessible and conditions are most stable.
Weather in the Highlands can change quickly. Our guides adjust the pace or plan as needed, always prioritizing safety.

You should have a solid, moderate level of fitness, capable of hiking 4 consecutive days, for 5–9 hours per day, covering approximately 12–15 km (7–9 miles) daily.
The route is not technical, but it is physically demanding. Expect steep sections, uneven volcanic terrain, sand, mud, snow patches, and exposed areas.
Endurance is far more important than speed. The ability to hike comfortably over multiple consecutive days matters more than moving fast on any single day.
You carry a daypack only. Your main luggage is transported between huts, making daily hiking more comfortable.
Yes. You will cross cold, unbridged rivers on foot, which is a normal part of the Laugavegur experience.
Recommended preparation includes long hikes to build endurance, hill or stair training, hiking with a lightly loaded pack, and basic strength training for legs, core, and back.
Conditions can change rapidly, even in summer. You should be prepared for wind, rain, cold temperatures, and mentally ready for variable weather.
