As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes more rugged and dramatic, leading to Hrafntinnusker at around 1,100 meters. This area is known for its striking obsidian formations and expansive views over glaciers and volcanic terrain.

Along the way, you’ll have the option to visit Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon, a dramatic and often overlooked highlight of the route.

This final stretch is both scenic and satisfying, marking the transition from rugged wilderness into one of Iceland’s most beautiful and diverse hiking areas.

Difficulty Level
The Laugavegur Trek is graded moderate to challenging, suitable for trekkers with good general fitness and previous hiking experience. Daily elevation gains range from 300–600 meters, and most hiking days cover 12–15 km, with one long and demanding day of approximately 25 km from Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn.
The itinerary includes five active trekking days, often across uneven trails, geothermal areas, river crossings, and exposed highland terrain. Trekkers must be capable of hiking a full day with a light daypack, while their main luggage is transported between huts.
Proper highland equipment is essential. Participants must wear sturdy hiking boots and carry weather-protective clothing suitable for Iceland’s rapidly changing conditions, including wind, rain, and cold temperatures.
This is a supported trek, meaning your baggage is transferred between huts, leaving you free to enjoy the trail with only what you need for the day.
