Five-day trekking adventure with four to five active hiking days, depending on the chosen route, on the final day in Thorsmork. The journey begins in Reykjavík, with a scenic drive to Landmannalaugar, where the trek starts.
This is a hut-to-hut trekking tour. The first night will be in the hut at Landmannalaugar. The second night is at the hut at Lake Álftavatn, and the third at Emstrur hut. The last night in Thorsmork will be at Basar hut. On the last day, there are several great hiking options in Thorsmork before returning to Reykjavík.
The trek is fully supported, with luggage transported between huts and an experienced, local English-speaking guide leading the group.
Our group size typically ranges from 10 to 16 people, ensuring an intimate and personalized experience. We use our own vehicles for transportation, making the journey to and from the hike an integral part of the adventure. Along the way, we make scenic stops, turning the journey itself into a memorable experience.
After you sign up for the tour, the guide will contact group members to offer advice and support with preparation. The group and the guide will have an online meeting before the tour starts.

The tour begins in Reykjavík at 10:00 am, with pickup from your hotel or a designated bus stop. From there, we leave the city behind and travel through South Iceland toward the remote, spectacular Icelandic Highlands.
The journey to Landmannalaugar is an experience in itself, taking us through an ever-changing landscape of mountains, lava fields, rivers, waterfalls, and volcanic terrain. Along the way, we’ll make selected stops to explore natural highlights and enjoy the scenery, with the exact route and stops depending on conditions and timing.
We expect to arrive in Landmannalaugar in the early afternoon. After settling in, we’ll have time to explore the area and enjoy an introductory hike in the surrounding mountains.
Later, we can unwind in Landmannalaugar’s natural geothermal pool before gathering for dinner and preparing for the trekking adventure ahead.
Facility at Landmannalaugar: We stay in a mountain hut in shared accommodation. Access to water and toilets. Drinkable water. Hot showers (1.100 ISK / 8 EUR per shower; not included in the tour). There is a store in Landmannalaugar where you can buy coffee, tea, soft drinks, and snacks.
Distance: Hike to the peak Bláfell: 10 km, ascent 420 m / descent 420 m
Included:
The day starts with breakfast, and during breakfast the trekkers will prepare a lunch pack for the day. The trekkers carry what they need for the day in their day pack. On the day’s trek, bring a snack and lunch for the hike, plus extra clothes. Everything else will be transferred by 4×4 vehicle to the next campsite.
The trek starts with a trek through the Laugahraun Lava to the mountain Brennisteinsalda. Along the way, the group will see bubbling rivers, geothermal hot springs, lava formations, and colorful mountains as it hikes to Hrafntinnusker at 1100 meters above sea level. The view from there is fantastic, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscape and nearby glaciers.
The area is also known for its abundance of obsidian, a black volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooled lava.
Hrafntinnusker sits about halfway between Landmannalaugar and Álftavatn, where we end the day. From there, we begin descending to Lake Álftavatn, where we camp overnight. There is a toilet facility at Hrafntinnusker (dry toilet)
On this trail, we must cross one river, so river-wading shoes are needed.
Facility at Lake Álftavatn: Mountain hut in shared accommodation. Access to water and toilets. Drinkable water. Hot showers (1.100 ISK / 8 EUR per shower; not included in the tour).
Distance: Landmannalaugar to Lake Álftavatn 24 km, ascent 900m / descent 1050m
Included
The day starts with breakfast and preparing lunch and a snack for the day hike. We begin the trek by viewing Lake Álftavatn. The lake lies in the heart of the Icelandic Highlands, surrounded by breathtaking volcanic landscapes. Lake Álftavatn is known for its stunning natural beauty, with crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding mountains and lava fields. We will enjoy different landscapes for the rest of the day as we hike onto Mælifellssandur, with black sand around us, green hills in the background, and a great view of the magnificent glacier Mýrdalsjökull, where the volcano Katla rests. Today we will have the opportunity to see Markarfjótsgljufur Canyon.
We will spend the night in the hut at Emstrur, where we will have dinner and take a short evening walk to see the nearby canyon.
Facility at Emstur: Mountain hut in shared accommodation. Access to water and toilets. Drinkable water. Hot showers (1,100 ISK per shower / 8 EUR; not included in the tour).
Distance: Lake Alftavatn to Emstur hut 15 km, ascent 200m / descent 300 m
Included
After breakfast and preparing for the day, we leave Emstrur behind and continue south toward Þórsmörk. The landscape gradually changes as we descend from the open, rugged Highlands into greener and more sheltered valleys.
Along the way, the trail crosses dramatic volcanic terrain shaped by glaciers, rivers, and past eruptions, with impressive views of surrounding mountains and glacier-covered peaks. As we approach Þórsmörk, vegetation becomes increasingly abundant, providing a striking contrast to the stark landscapes of the previous days.
Þórsmörk is one of Iceland’s most beautiful natural areas, known for its dramatic mountain scenery, deep valleys, glacial rivers, and native birch forests. Surrounded by glaciers and rugged peaks, it provides a spectacular setting for the final section of the Laugavegur Trail and a memorable conclusion to our journey through the Highlands.
Facility at Básar cabin: Spacious cabin with a good kitchen and a shared room to eat dinner and relax. We sleep in a dorm. Water, toilet, and electricity. Drinkable water. Hot showers (showers are included).
Distance: Emstur hut to Thorsmork (Basar Cabin) 15km, ascent 300m / descent 600m
Included:
Today we wake up in our camp in a natural birch forest in Básar in the Thorsmörk valley. We will have breakfast, then hike to one of the surrounding peaks. From there, we’ll have panoramic views of glaciers, including Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, as well as the surrounding valleys and mountains of Thórsmörk. After the hike, we’ll have lunch in the hut before we travel in our 4×4 truck to the main road and on to Reykjavík. Estimated arrival in Reykjavík, where the traveler will be dropped off at their hotel, is between 17:00 and 18:00. On the way back from Thórsmörk, you can hike the Stakkholtsgjá canyon or stop to see the Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
Included:
Supported trek / Luggage transfer
Luggage transfers are provided, ensuring a more comfortable hiking experience so you only need to carry what you need for the day. Participants must carry only a compact day backpack with essentials such as lunch, a water bottle, medication, sunglasses, river-crossing shoes, rain gear, and any additional clothing or items needed for the day.
Difficulty Level
The Laugavegur Trek is graded moderate to challenging and suits trekkers with good general fitness and previous hiking experience. Daily elevation gains range from 300–600 meters, and most hiking days cover 12–15 km, with one long, demanding day of about 25 km from Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn.
The itinerary includes five active trekking days, often across uneven trails, geothermal areas, river crossings, and exposed highland terrain. Trekkers must be able to hike a full day with a light daypack, while their main luggage is transported between huts.
Proper highland equipment is essential. Participants must wear sturdy hiking boots and carry weather-protective clothing suitable for Iceland’s rapidly changing conditions, including wind, rain, and cold temperatures.
This is a supported trek, meaning your baggage is transferred between huts, so you can enjoy the trail with only what you need for the day.
