Introduction

Discover a quieter side of Iceland on an eight-day guided Highland trekking adventure. Beginning with a hike in Þórsmörk, this journey combines remote wilderness trails with the northern section of the renowned Laugavegur Trail, finishing among Landmannalaugar’s colorful rhyolite mountains.

After our first overnight at Básar, we travel to Lake Langisjór to begin the main wilderness trek. From Sveinstindur, our route leads alongside the Skaftá river, through the unusual lava formations of Skælingar, and into Eldgjá canyon. We continue toward Strútur, pausing at the remote Strútslaug hot spring before crossing volcanic terrain to Lake Álftavatn.

The final stages take us north along Laugavegur through Hrafntinnusker’s geothermal landscapes to Landmannalaugar. A morning hike provides one last opportunity to explore before returning to Reykjavík.

This route brings you into the Southern Highlands that IceTrek knows and loves. Your local guide shares knowledge of the landscapes along the way, while luggage transfers let you hike with a daypack and settle into a mountain hut each evening.

Prefer to hike at your own pace? Explore our self-guided Laugavegur trek, with mountain hut accommodation, luggage transfers, Reykjavík transfers, a written trekking guide, and GPS data included. Guests hike independently and arrange their own meals.

Supported trek / Luggage transfer

Luggage transfers are provided, ensuring a more comfortable hiking experience so you only need to carry what you need for the day. Participants must carry only a compact day backpack with essentials such as lunch, a water bottle, medication, sunglasses, river-crossing shoes, rain gear, and any additional clothing or items needed for the day.

Difficulty Level

This trek and parts of the Laugavegur Trek are graded moderate to challenging and suits trekkers with good general fitness and previous hiking experience. Daily elevation gains range from 300–600 meters, and most hiking days cover 12–15 km, with one long, demanding day of about 25 km from Álftavatn to Landmannalaugar.

The itinerary includes, often across uneven trails, geothermal areas, river crossings, and exposed highland terrain. Trekkers must be able to hike a full day with a light daypack, while their main luggage is transported between huts.

Proper highland equipment is essential. Participants must wear sturdy hiking boots and carry weather-protective clothing suitable for Iceland’s rapidly changing conditions, including wind, rain, and cold temperatures.

This is a supported trek, meaning your baggage is transferred between huts, so you can enjoy the trail with only what you need for the day.

This trek and parts of the Laugavegur Trek are considered moderate to challenging. It involves full hiking days on varied terrain and is best suited for active travelers with good fitness.
Previous multi-day or long-distance hiking experience is recommended but not mandatory. Good fitness, balance, and comfort hiking for several hours a day are essential.
Accommodation is in mountain huts, shared dormitory-style. Huts are simple but comfortable, offering shelter, mattresses, and basic facilities.
Breakfast and dinner are typically included, along with packed lunches for trekking days. Dietary requirements should be communicated in advance.
You hike with a daypack only. Main luggage is transported from hut to hut, allowing you to carry just daily essentials such as water, snacks, extra layers, and rain gear.
The trekking season runs from late June to early September, when the trail is accessible and conditions are most stable.
Weather in the Highlands can change quickly. Our guides adjust the pace or plan as needed, always prioritizing safety.
Build your fitness with regular hikes, including hills and uneven terrain, while carrying your daypack. Practice hiking on consecutive days, break in your hiking boots before departure, and review our packing guide. Your IceTrek guide handles navigation and provides advice, but you should arrive ready for long hiking days, river crossings, and changing mountain weather.
Meals are provided from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on Day 8, including packed lunches for hiking days. Bring any favorite trail snacks or personal dietary supplements, and carry your daily lunch and snacks in your daypack. Please let us know about allergies or dietary requirements before departure so we can discuss suitable arrangements.
Yes. Travel and medical insurance is strongly recommended for all participants.
This trek suits active travelers with good fitness who enjoy hiking with a group and the support of an experienced local guide. You should be comfortable walking for several hours on consecutive days over uneven terrain, including a demanding stage of approximately 24 km, and managing river crossings with guidance. IceTrek arranges mountain hut accommodation, meals, transportation, and luggage transfers, allowing you to hike with just a daypack. Expect shared accommodation and changing Highland weather throughout the journey.
You should have a solid, moderate level of fitness, capable of hiking 4 consecutive days, for 5–9 hours per day, covering approximately 12–15 km (7–9 miles) daily.
The route is not technical, but it is physically demanding. Expect steep sections, uneven volcanic terrain, sand, mud, snow patches, and exposed areas.
Endurance is far more important than speed. The ability to hike comfortably over multiple consecutive days matters more than moving fast on any single day.
You carry a daypack only. Your main luggage is transported between huts, making daily hiking more comfortable.
Yes. You will cross cold, unbridged rivers on foot, which is a normal part of the Laugavegur experience.
Recommended preparation includes long hikes to build endurance, hill or stair training, hiking with a lightly loaded pack, and basic strength training for legs, core, and back.
Conditions can change rapidly, even in summer. You should be prepared for wind, rain, cold temperatures, and mentally ready for variable weather.
While some complete the route faster, five days is the recommended and most comfortable pace, allowing time to recover and fully enjoy the landscape.
