Good to know

Supported trek / Luggage transfer

Luggage transfers are provided, ensuring a more comfortable hiking experience so you only must carry what you need for the day. Participants are required to carry only a compact day backpack containing essentials such as lunch, a water bottle, medication, sunglasses, river crossing shoes, rain gear, and any additional clothing or items needed for the day.

Difficulty Level

The Laugavegur Trek is graded moderate to challenging, suitable for trekkers with good general fitness and previous hiking experience. Daily elevation gains range from 300–600 meters, and most hiking days cover 12–15 km, with one long and demanding day of approximately 25 km from Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn.

The itinerary includes five active trekking days, often across uneven trails, geothermal areas, river crossings, and exposed highland terrain. Trekkers must be capable of hiking a full day with a light daypack, while their main luggage is transported between huts.

Proper highland equipment is essential. Participants must wear sturdy hiking boots and carry weather-protective clothing suitable for Iceland’s rapidly changing conditions, including wind, rain, and cold temperatures.

This is a supported trek, meaning your baggage is transferred between huts, leaving you free to enjoy the trail with only what you need for the day.

You should have a solid, moderate level of fitness, capable of hiking 4 consecutive days, for 5–9 hours per day, covering approximately 12–15 km (7–9 miles) daily.
The route is not technical, but it is physically demanding. Expect steep sections, uneven volcanic terrain, sand, mud, snow patches, and exposed areas.

Recommended preparation includes long hikes to build endurance, hill or stair training, hiking with a lightly loaded pack, and basic strength training for legs, core, and back.
Conditions can change rapidly, even in summer. You should be prepared for wind, rain, cold temperatures, and mentally ready for variable weather.
The five-day itinerary is designed to create a comfortable and enjoyable pace, allowing you to fully experience the diverse landscapes of the Laugavegur Trail without feeling rushed.
